For the eighth-consecutive season, the Big Red track & field team will officially begin their season by hosting the annual Denison Lid-Lifter this Saturday (Jan. 23) at the Mitchell Fieldhouse in Granville.
The nine-team field will be made up of Denison, Bethany, California University of Pennsylvania, Carnegie Mellon, Ohio Christian, Thomas More, Transylvania, Wittenberg and West Virginia Wesleyan. Field event on Saturday are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., while the running events will commence at 1 p.m. Both field and running events will be on a rolling schedule.
The men’s team will be led by a seven-man senior class that includes Mitch and Ryan Keller and Quenton Richards. Last season, the Keller twins helped the Big Red score in two events, including earning All-North Coast Athletic Conference honors as one-half of the distance medley relay team that finished third overall. The Kellers also teamed up with Ethan George and fellow senior Ian Mulmat to place fourth in the 4x400 relay. Richards earned all-conference honors in 2014 with a third-place performance in the 60-meter dash.
The women return two All-NCAC performers from last year’s indoor meet, including 10-time NCAC Indoor Champion Aedin Brennan. Brennan, who captured the program’s first women’s national championship in the spring, was named NCAC Indoor Field Athlete of the Year for the second time last season. The six-time All-American will look to capture her fourth-straight NCAC pentathlon title this March. Sophomore Hannah Hall is coming off her first NCAC championship after winning the indoor high jump last March.
The 2016 Denison Lid-Lifter will be the first of four home meets this winter. The Big Red will also host the Bob Shannon Invitational on Feb. 6, which will coincide with the All-Ohio Combined Events Championship (Feb. 6-7). The final home event of the indoor season will be the Denison Last Chance Meet on Feb. 26.
