Late rally leads to extra-inning win
Andrew Touhy's RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning sent Denison to an 8-7 win over Anderson University from Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla.
Denison clinched its second win of the season by scoring four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game at 7-7, forcing extra-innings. Three of the four runs in the eighth would come with two outs thanks to a 3-run single by Duncan Moran.
Ryan Mulligan, who made his first start of the season at shortstop, came in to pitch in the top of the ninth inning. Mulligan would work the next three innings, striking out six while allowing just one hit and one walk. Mulligan went 3-for-5 at the plate and also picked up the win on the mound.
Touhy's game-winning hit was set up by a lead-off walk by Georgie Montes. Eric Zmuda followed with a sacrifice bunt that moved Montes into scoring position. A wild pitch would move Montes to third, but after a strike out by Conner Madey, DU was facing a situation eerily similar to one they faced in the 10th inning when they had Mulligan on third with only one out. Two strikeouts by Lane Hanzel would keep the game moving into the 11th. This time the veteran, Touhy, was able to take Hanzel's offering up the middle to centerfield, ending a game that lasted nearly four and a half hours.
Touhy finished 4-for-6 with one RBI and a walk, marking the first four-hit day of his career. Moran was 3-for-5 with three RBIs, and Montes was 2-for-5 with an inside-the-park home run in the sixth inning and a triple in the eighth. He also scored three runs.
Connor Murphy got the start and pitched six innings, allowing five runs, only one of which was earned. The win went to Mulligan who improves to 1-0. Hanzel suffered the loss for Anderson.
