BEXLEY, Ohio -- Denison's five-run second inning was all the Big Red needed to take down regional foe Capital, 11-3, on Friday at Clowson Field.

Senior Tucker Davison broke the scoreless tie in the second with a base hit up the middle that scored junior Sam Frazen from third. Jack Blanchard followed with another single, this time through the left side, that plated Joseph Maydwell. Sophomore Nick Pettigrew continued the hit parade with his first-career triple that drove in Davison and Blanchard. Pettigrew came around to score the final run of the frame on a sacrifice fly to center by Evan Flax.

The Crusaders produced a single run in the bottom of the second and two more in the third to cut the deficit to two after three innings. DU extended their lead back to five with one swing of the bat in the fourth frame. With two outs, Frazen crushed a three-run homer that plated Noah Hahn and Tanner Johnson. Eric Zmuda and Flax provided the Big Red with some insurance runs following back-to-back RBI doubles in the eighth. Johnson knocked in another with a base hit to right.

Sophomore Mikey Rivera (2-1) picked up the win in relief of starter Cody Mauri after surrendering just one hit in five shutout innings. Rivera also struck out a career-high seven batters. Mauri threw three innings, allowing three runs on four hits with one strikeout. Senior Connor Hanrahan closed the door by retiring the side in order, which included back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.

Frazen finished with 2-for-5 with two extra-base hits, three RBIs and two runs, while Flax and Pettigrew both knocked in a pair. Johnson also had two hits, while Blanchard touched the dish twice. Zmuda, Flax, Davison and Blanchard all swiped a base in the win.

The Big Red improves to 10-3 with the victory, while the loss drops Capital to 9-6. Denison will be back in action on Sunday (March 26) when they host Heidelberg. First pitch from Granville is slated for 1 p.m.
