LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Big Red pitching staff surrendered only one run on seven hits in a doubleheader sweep at Transylvania on Saturday. Denison took game one, 5-1 and prevailed in game two, 3-0.

Making only the second start of his collegiate career in game two, freshman Taylor Perrett tallied his second shutout of the season, throwing a two-hitter on 80 pitches with two strikeouts.

Perrett started working with a one-run lead in the second inning after Joseph Maydwell grounded into a double play with the bases loaded, allowing Will Krushena to score from third.

Another run was added in the third inning that began with a lead-off single to left from senior Jack Blanchard. An errant throw by Transylvania's starting pitcher Nick Craddock sent Blanchard from first to third, and following a Noah Hahn groundout, Tanner Johnson hit an RBI single out to left field to score Blanchard for a 2-0 lead.

With Perrett totaling nine-straight outs through the first three innings of action, the Big Red offense tacked on another insurance run in the fourth when a Sam Frazen double scored Krushena from first base. From that point on, it was all Perrett.

Taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning, the first-year allowed only one hit in the fifth, and then another in the seventh to keep his ERA at 0.00 and cash in on his second win of the season.

Also earning his second win of the season in as many games, junior right-hander John Troll rebounded from a one-run first in game one to go eight innings deep, allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts.

Despite falling behind 1-0 in the first, Frazen opened the third with a single to right center that put the tying run at first base. Following a passed ball and a groundout that sent Frazen to third with two outs, Transylvania's Evan Hall threw a wild pitch that sent Frazen home to tie the score at 1-1 heading into the fourth inning.

After Troll sat down six of the next seven batters, Denison took the lead in the fifth when Nick Pettigrew sent a triple to left center, scoring Grady Paine from third to take a 2-1 advantage.

DU built on their lead in the seventh following a lead-off single from Paine, and two batters later, a double to left center by Maydwell that put runners on second and third with only one out.

In the next at-bat, Pettigrew earned his second RBI of the game when a single through the right side scored Paine and sent Maydwell to third. With two down and Blanchard at the dish, a wild pitch from Colton Hartig brought Maydwell across home plate to give Denison a 4-1 lead after seven innings.

Brian McAuliffe joined the scoring party in the eighth when DU scored on their third wild pitch of the game to take a 5-1 lead.

Cody Mauri relieved Troll after eight innings of one-run baseball to secure the win for the Big Red, allowing one hit in the ninth.

Pettigrew led the Big Red offense with two RBIs on the day, while Paine and Krushena totaled three hits each. Perrett and Troll move to 2-0 on the year, helping the Big Red to a 4-1 overall record.

Denison will return to the diamond on Sunday, March 11 for their home-opener with the Crusaders of Capital University. First-pitch is set for 2 p.m.
