LEXINGTON, Va.--  Denison's stellar 2017 season came to an unfortunate end on Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Division III Tournament.  The Big Red played Washington and Lee to a stalemate until three minutes into the second overtime.  That's when the Generals leading scorer, Haley Tucker scored the game-winner off a nifty give and go from Lauren Paolano allowing W&L to advance with the 1-0 victory.

The loss snaps a school-record 15-game winning streak, marking the first defeat since Sept. 13.

The Generals came out of the gate as the aggressor on offense, challenging the stingy Big Red defense anchored by Michelle Kabaira.  With 14 minutes left in the first half, Tucker sent a shot off the post.  Over the final 10 minutes of the first half, the Big Red offense began to settle in.  Charlotte Godfrey took two shots and Emily Marlatt had an outstanding look that was denied by Ariyel Yavalar in the waning minutes of the first half.

In the second half, DU continued to force the issue.  They outshot the Generals 8-2 and took five penalty corners in the period.  The Big Red averted disaster at the end of regulation as W&L forced a penalty corner with no time remaining on the clock.  Tucker's shot off the corner hit the post and the game went to overtime.

In overtime, players on the field are reduced from 11 vs. 11 to seven-on-seven.  In the 83rd minute of play, DU caught a break when Washington and Lee's Abigail Hancock was issued a green card. That sent her to the bench for two minutes allowing Denison to have a seven-on-six advantage.  Denison quickly forced back-to-back penalty corners, but Charlotte Happel's pair of shots failed to find the back of the cage.

In the second overtime, Denison stormed out of the gates once again, taking two shots in the first minute.  The second shot, by Abby Scully, was saved by Yavalar.  That would be Denison's last scoring opportunity as the Generals managed to flip the field on a breakaway.  One minute later, Tucker ended things with her program record-setting 20th goal of the season.

Denison held a 17-8 advantage in shots and a 7-5 advantage in corners.  Kerry Lawler posted two saves in the cage for the Big Red while Yavalar turned in four saves for the Generals.

With the win, Washington and Lee move on to the second round of the NCAA Tournament where they will face Messiah on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Mechanicsburg, Pa.  Denison's season comes to a close with a record of 17-4.
