CLEVELAND, Ohio-- A 16-0 run by Denison late in the second half helped push the Big Red to a 74-69 win over Case Western Reserve on Tuesday night at Horsburgh Gymnasium. The win moves Denison to 3-1 on the season.
DU held a one point lead at halftime but the Spartans heated up in the second, taking an eight-point lead with 8:02 to play after a 3-pointer by Antonio Ionadi.
Over the next four minutes the Spartans did not score. That opened the door for Denison's furious comeback that was spurred on by three-straight 3-pointers by Claude Chandonnet and two from Jack Coulter. After Coulter's second triple, DU took a 59-56 lead with 5:46 remaining.
CWRU ended the run with an Ignas Masiulionis basket with 4:02 remaining. Masiulionis cut Denison's lead to one at 63-62 after a layup with 2:42 to play.
A steal and a basket by Denison's Garrett Collier gave them a 65-62 lead with 2:23 to play. At the other end, Masiulonis missed a 3-pointer and after a rebound by Matt Doyle, Collier went to the line and sank the pair.
Case got to within three points after two charity tosses by Kai Fletcher. The dagger was delivered by Denison's Maxwell Siwik who drilled a 3-pointer with 1:09 on the clock, extending DU's lead to 70-64,
Siwik led Denison with 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting in 25 minutes off the bench. Doyle scored 11 points and Coulter chipped in nine points, all from beyond the arc. Brou and Johnny Vernaso led the way with five rebounds.
