GRANVILLE, Ohio-- Allegheny dealt a serious blow to Denison's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament hopes after a 90-75 loss to the Gators on Saturday afternoon at Livingston Gymnasium. Allegheny got a career-high 42 points and 14 rebounds from junior Jordan Rawls and an additional 20 points from first-year guard Brian Roberts, Jr. The win moves the Gators to 5-11 in conference play while Denison drops to 3-13 in the NCAC.
DU trailed by nine at halftime and the Gators opened the second half on an 8-0 run to take a 60-43 lead with 16 minutes to play. The Big Red answered with a 16-4 run over the next five minutes to cut the deficit to five with 11:24 to play. The run was powered by a pair of 3-pointers from Claude Chandonnet and two triples by Jack Coulter.
The Big Red got to within six points of the lead with 8:46 remaining but Allegheny turned to their star duo of Rawls and Roberts and quickly the lead was back to double figures.
Denison shot 40 percent from the field (28-of-70) and was 13-of-39 from long range (.333). Coulter led Denison with 23 points. He was 8-for-12 from the floor and 7-of-10 on 3-point tries. Chandonnet followed with 14 points in 19 minutes of action. He connected on 4-of-6 of his 3-point tries. Matt Doyle and Jake Livingston chipped in nine points.
Rawls, who scored his 1,000th career point at Allegheny earlier this week, was 15-of-27 from the field and 5-of-10 from deep. Allegheny shot 49 percent from the field and was 16-of-22 from the free throw line.
Denison will close out the regular season next week with road games at DePauw (Feb. 13) and Ohio Wesleyan (Feb. 16).
Prior to the game, Denison honored its three senior members, Jack Lambert, Doyle and Chandonnet along with four-year team manager Cameron Moore.
