NASHPORT, Ohio -- Led by a pair of opening round 76's from Marc Mitchell and Christian Early, Denison men's golf currently sits in second place at the Big Red's inaugural Virtues Fall Shootout held at the Virtues Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio. Totaling a first round score of 317, DU ended the first day one stroke ahead of third place Thomas More University (318) and ten strokes behind first-place Allegheny College.
Competing as the Big Red's No. 1 on the weekend, Mitchell birdied the fourth and fifth holes during the first round to log a 35 on the front nine and a four-over-par 76 to finish the round in a tie for fifth place. Joining Mitchell in a tie for fifth, Early tallied his 76 after parring all but one hole on the back nine to enter the second round just five strokes back of the leader, Washington & Jefferson's Jake Darr at 71.
Shooting nine-over-par on the first day, Nick Brodbeck finished the first round in a tie for 16th place with a score of 81, while Connor Holleran garnered an 84 (T-24th) and freshman Ben Scherman followed with an 85 (T-27th) to round out the team scoring.
Competing as individuals for DU, Cal Buonocore led the pack in a tie for 11th with a six-over-par 78, while Will Grady posted an 81 (T-16th) and freshman Griffin Hayden entered the second round with a 91 (T-37th).
Denison will return to the tee box on Monday, October 22 for the final round of the Virtues Fall Shootout. Opening tee time is set for 9 a.m.
