#4 Big Red zooms past Lords
Denison's 12-0 start has been full of impressive performances but tonight's 23-2 win over Kenyon just might take the cake. To call the Big Red's start dominate might not be doing it justice. All the 4th ranked Big Red did was score 13 first half goals while maintaining possession for virtually the entire opening 30 minutes of play.
DU led 7-0 after one quarter and five minutes into the second quarter it was 10-0 in favor of the Big Red. In fact, Kenyon did not even attempt a shot until there was just four minutes left in the second quarter.
Eric Baumgardner did his job by racking up face-off wins and the offense was sniping shots from inside and outside. Thirteen different players scored for DU and three individuals finished with hat tricks.
In the third quarter, senior attack Eddie Vita scored his second goal of the contest and became the 13th player in Denison lacrosse history to score 100 career goals. Vita has 26 goals and 19 assists on the year.
Fourteen of Denison's 23 goals were assisted, and senior Chapin Speidel led all players with four assists, all coming in the first half.
DU outshot Kenyon 47-13, and outgained them in ground balls, 31-13. The Lords committed 16 turnovers and were 0-for-4 in extra man. The Big Red committed only nine turnovers and was 3-for-3 in man-up situations. Denison won 18-of-26 face-off's, with Baumgardner going 13-for-17 with seven ground balls.
Tonight's win marked the ninth-straight victory over Kenyon. Denison's last loss to the Lords came in the 2006 season opener. DU holds a 67-16 advantage over Kenyon in the all-time series which dates back to 1953. This is the third year the two schools have played for the travelling Thomsen-Heiser Trophy named in honor of former Denison head coach Tommy Thomsen and former Kenyon coach Bill Heiser. Denison is 3-0 in those contests.
Denison will look to go 13-0 for the first time in school history on Saturday when they travel to Springfield, Ohio for a 7 p.m. face-off against Wittenberg University.
