SPARKS, Md.—Spencer Butler notched a hat-trick and Liam Rooney tallied two goals andfour assists as the 19th ranked Denison Big Red defeated Montclair State, 13-4 from the US Lacrosse Headquarters.

The first eight minutes of the game went by without a goal, but Denison broke through with 6:28 left in the first when Jake Waxter scored his third goal of the season.  Waxter came back one minute later with another unassisted score, giving DU a 2-0 lead with five minutes to play in the opening quarter.

Another unassisted goal came with 2:36 on the clock as first-year Peter Pittroff scored for the second time this season.  On the ensuing faceoff, Denison's Henry DeCamp took the draw and sprinted toward his own goal in order to create some space between himself and the hard-charging Red Hawk defense.  With the Denison cage empty, Montclair State's Blasé Mantineo checked the ball away from DeCamp and directly into his own cage for the own goal.

That would be the only goal the Red Hawks would score until 13:08 left in the third quarter.  By then, Denison had built its lead to 9-1.  In the second half, DU got two more goals from Butler, one more from Pittroff and a second goal from Owen Armstrong to set the final at 13-4.

The Big Red outshot Montclair State, 36-19 and won the ground ball battle, 38-29.  Richie Bartozzi led the defense with three caused turnovers and five ground balls.  Chris Broderick also scooped up five ground balls while DeCamp finished with four after going 10-for-21 when facing off.

Butler led the offense with eight shots. He finished with three goals and one assist.  Rookie goalie Stephen Paras posted five saves in the cage for DU.  His counterpart, Lucas Jones, had five saves for the Red Hawks.

Denison was 1-for-3 in extra-man situations while Montclair finished 1-for-4 on their EMO's.

The Big Red (3-1) returns to action on Friday, March 17 when they take on Dickinson at 12:30 p.m. as a part of the 2017 Mustang Classic hosted by Stevenson University in Owings Mills, Md.
