GRANVILLE, Ohio--  Denison got five goals from Will Donohue and five assists from Liam Rooney, paving the way for a 17-9 victory over Carthage College in the second round of the 2017 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Tournament.

With the win, Denison advances to the third round of the tournament on Saturday, May 13 against Illinois Wesleyan at Piper Stadium in Granville. The start time will be announced on Thursday.

Denison was playing their first game in 10 days and the rust was evident at times.  That didn't stop them from taking a 5-2 lead after the first quarter powered by two goals from Spencer Butler and scores from Donohue, Peter Pittroff and Owen Armstrong.

Rooney entered the game needing two points to become Denison's career leader.  He notched career point No. 257 with 9:37 left in the second quarter on an unassisted goal that put his team in front 6-3.  DU went on to outscore Carthage 6-1 in the second quarter to take an 11-3 lead into the intermission.

In the second half, Rooney added four more assists with three coming on goals by Donohue.  Rooney passed Andy John '84 as the career leader in points.  He has scored 105 points this season (32 goals, 73 assists) and has 261 points (114 goals, 147 assists) in his career.

Donohue has also put himself in a position to break a long-standing record at Denison.  He needs seven goals to break the Denison single-season record (63) set by John in 1984.  Donohue's 57 goals this season ranks second in the DU record books.

After taking home MVP honors of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, Henry DeCamp continued his impressive play at the faceoff X.  He was 21-for-26 and led the way with 14 ground balls.  His big day raised his faceoff percentage to .648.

Senior defenseman Teddy Sawyer caused a team-best five turnovers and finished with three ground balls and one assist.  Pittroff scored four goals on five shots and Butler and Jake Waxter each tallied three points apiece.

Denison outshot Carthage 43-19 and dominated the ground ball game, 42-11.  Carthage goalie Ryan Smith posted 14 saves.  Stephen Paras had six saves for the Big Red.

The Big Red's man-up offense entered the game ranked No. 1 in Division III and they improved that percentage going 3-of-4 when having a man advantage.

Denison improves to 16-1, running their winning streak to 16 games.  Illinois Wesleyan defeated Aurora 19-15 in their second round matchup.  This will be the first-ever meeting between Denison and Illinois Wesleyan in men's lacrosse.
