GRANVILLE, Ohio – Denison men's soccer capitalized on a penalty kick goal from senior Jordan Williams in the fourth minute to secure a 1-0 victory over the University of Mount Union on Saturday night at Barclay-Thomsen Field.

The Big Red totaled 13 shots on the evening, but it was the early penalty kick that shaped the match. Denison's senior Drew LaGaipa was fouled just inside the 18-yard box by the Purple Raiders during the fourth minute of play. Williams then lined up for the penalty shot and finished it for a 1-0 lead and his first goal of the season.

Denison kept their advantage throughout the night as they displayed an excellent defensive effort. Led by Williams, David Jaben and Ryan Albers, the Big Red backline allowed only three shots on goal in a full 90 minutes of action.

The keeper combination of senior Jack Thomas and freshman Dylan Brown worked a shutout for the Big Red, as Thomas recorded the win with a three save performance. For Mount Union, sophomore goalkeeper Zach Hlas totaled four saves in 90 minutes played, including a flying punch out save in the 61st minute to avoid another Denison goal.

The Purple Raiders made a final push in the 83rd minute when junior Ian Moorhead attempted an attack inside the Denison box, but a sliding block from Brown kept Mount Union at bay for the remainder of the night.

The Big Red will hit the road on Wednesday, September 20 as they head to Westerville, Ohio to take on the Otterbein Cardinals at 7 p.m.
