GRANVILLE, Ohio – Jordan Williams' goal in the first minute of play helped the Big Red shut out Oberlin College 2-0 on Wednesday evening at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
The fireworks started early for Denison when junior Luis Zamora sent a cross over to Williams just outside of the goal box where he finished it in goal only 16 seconds into the match. The goal marked Williams' fourth of the season. DU outshot the Yeomen 5-2 in the first half, as the lone goal in the first minute gave the Big Red a 1-0 lead heading into intermission.
Denison added to their lead in the second half as Zamora received a pass from Jasdeep Khaira in the 57th minute and chipped it past Oberlin's goalkeeper Connor English to take a 2-0 advantage. Oberlin attempted more corner kicks (3-0) and outshot the Big Red 7-3 in the second half, but the Yeomen were unable to connect on either of their two shots on goal as Denison secured the 2-0 victory.
DU's senior keeper Jack Thomas recorded his third shutout performance of the season, totaling two saves in a full 90 minutes of play. Opposite of Thomas, English was unable to record a save for Oberlin in his 90-minute effort.
Zamora finished the night with one goal and one assist, while he, Williams and Will Kendall led the team with two shots each.
The Big Red have shut out their opponents in three of their last four matches and have totaled a record of 2-1-1 in that time.
Denison will travel to Springfield, Ohio this Saturday, Oct. 14 to take on Wittenberg University. The match is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start.
