AKRON, Ohio--  Denison men's swimming posted four NCAA 'B' cuts on Saturday en route to a fourth-place finish at the Akron Zips Classic.  Denison swam a grueling 13 finals across two sessions on Saturday, capping off a strong opening weekend against four Division I opponents.

Miami University won the team title with 1,079 points.  Cincinnati was second with 762.5 while Cleveland State took third at 603.5.  Denison placed fourth with 558 points and Xavier landed sixth with 324.

After a second place finish in the 500 free on Friday night, Matt Hedman posted a pair of victories and two 'B' cuts in the 400 IM and the 1,650 free.  Hedman swam the mile in 15:33.96 and was followed by first-year teammate Dayen Wilson who logged his first career 'B' cut by touching in 16:03.90 to take fourth.  Another rookie, Lukas Gately, finished seventh in the 1,650 in 16:21.81 and James Baker who took eighth in 16:21.99.

In the 400 IM, Hedman led the way with a winning time of 3:59.21.  John Stauffer was second in 4:04.06 and newcomer Rich Kurlich was seventh in 4:05.47.  At last year's NCAA Championship, Hedman finished second in the 1,650 free and fourth in the 400 IM.  He is a six-time All-American.

Denison's fourth and final 'B' cut on Saturday came from Kurlich in the 200 breaststroke after a time of 2:03.67.  This is the first 'B' cut for the rookie, Kurlich.

In the 200 backstroke, Bebe Wang placed fifth in 1:50.23, just missing a provisional qualifying time.  Stauffer followed in sixth place in 1:51.86.  Four-time All-American Drake Horton placed sixth in the 100 free (46.84) and 15th in the 200 free (1:44.61).

First-year Noah Houskeeper finished seventh in the 200 fly with a time of 1:52.99.  Mitch Williams followed in ninth place at 1:54.49.  Tiernan Foster-Smith logged a 10th place finish in the 100 breast (59.22) and Wang was ninth in the 100 backstroke in 52.05 while first-year Samuel Jo placed 14th in 53.26.

Four Big Red swimmers logged top-18 finishes in the 100 fly led by Kymani Senior's 13th place finish in 51.88.  Michael Arpasi followed in 15th (52.02) while Colin Macmillan (17th -52.31) and Matt McHugh (18th – 52.33) rounded out the event.

Three relays took place on Saturday and Denison was led by a fourth-place finish by Christien Kelly, McHugh, Arpasi and Senior who took fourth in 1:25.12.

A pair of sixth-place finishes were turned in by Denison in the 200-medley relay and the 400 free relay.
