OBERLIN, Ohio – The Denison men's tennis team traveled to Oberlin, Ohio this past weekend to compete in the Oberlin Invitational. The Big Red matched up with eight other teams at the Hunsinger Courts, including Kenyon College, John Carroll University, Baldwin Wallace College, Ohio Northern University, Case Western Reserve University, the College of Wooster, Earlham College and the hosts, Oberlin College. Denison totaled 32 victories and a combined seven first-place finishes during the tournament.
On the singles courts, four players won their flights for the Big Red. Mitchell Thai, Jamie McDonald and Jacob Dennen each swept six straight sets to garner first-place finishes for DU. For their fourth flight victory of the weekend, Denison's Vlad Rotnov dropped the first set to Gustavo Garcia (John Carroll) 3-6, but rebounded with winning sets of 6-0 and 10-6 to secure the first-place finish.
In doubles play, Denison went 12-1 for the tournament, grabbing three additional first-place finishes. The pair of Thai and McDonald didn't drop a single set as they defeated Oberlin's Camron Cohen and Michael Drougas 8-3 to win their flight. McGuigan and Tyler Gargas took care of an Oberlin pairing as well, defeating Matt Gittings and Robert Gittings 8-3 for Denison's second victory of the finals. Purnode and Dennen continued the Big Red dominance, sweeping three straight sets and defeating Garcia and Dillon O'Brien (John Carroll) 8-3 to give Denison three finals victories.
The Big Red ended the weekend with a record of 32-8 across all competitions, winning 80 percent of their matches for the tournament. Denison will return to action next weekend as they head to Kalamazoo, Michigan for the 2017 ITA Regional Tournament. The event will run from Friday, September 29 through Sunday, October 1.
