DU defeats Oberlin to close out regular season

OBERLIN, Ohio – Denison men's tennis improved to 11-4 to close out regular season play following a 6-3 victory at Oberlin College on Sunday afternoon at the Hunsinger Tennis Courts.

In doubles play, Oberlin's Camron Cohen and Stephen Gruppuso, the central region's 10th ranked pairing, defeated Kevin Brown and Blake Burstein in top flight doubles, 8-2. The Big Red came storming back in No. 2 doubles as Jamie McDonald and Mitchell Thai tallied an 8-3 win over Manickam Manickam and Michael Drougas, 8-3. Vlad Rotnov and Brian Weisberg also took No. 3 doubles from the Yeomen, defeating Levi Kimmel and Robert Gittings, 8-5, to take a 2-1 advantage heading to singles play.

On the singles courts, Rotnov improved to 9-5 in top flight singles on the season as he defeated Drougas in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. In No. 3 singles, Brown dropped the first set to Zachary Vaughn, 4-6, but rallied to win the final two sets, 7-6, 6-0.

No. 4 singles started strong for Patrick McGuigan with a 6-3 first set victory, but Oberlin's Manickam tied the sets at one each after taking the second set, 6-4. In the third and final set, McGuigan secured the victory with a 6-3 win in the third set.

Danish Siddiquie would earn the final Big Red win on the No. 5 court, defeating Cohen, 6-4, 6-1.

Finishing the regular season with a 4-0 record in the North Coast Athletic Conference West division, Denison will enter the 2018 NCAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed, matching up with No. 7 Wooster on Friday, April 27 in the quarterfinals beginning at 9 a.m. in Indianapolis, Ind.
