OBERLIN, Ohio – Denison men's tennis traveled to Oberlin, Ohio this past weekend to compete in the 2018 Oberlin College Invitational. Taking part in their second fall tournament of the season, the Big Red were one of 12 teams competing on Saturday and Sunday, including Carnegie Mellon, Case Western Reserve, Allegheny, Tiffin, Ashland, Wooster, John Carroll, Baldwin Wallace, Earlham, Ohio Northern, and tournament host, Oberlin.
In doubles play, the Big Red were led by the combo of John Purnode and Julian Janczak, who secured victories over Allegheny's Matt Andrus and Cooper Miller, 8-4, and Jessie DeWitt and Nebyou Minassie from Wooster, 8-5.
Going 3-3 in their final six doubles matches of the day, the sophomore tandem of Vlad Rotnov and Brian Weisberg enjoyed an 8-5 victory over CMU's Ray Boppana and Josh Pinckney, before falling to Carnegie Mellon's Yannick Bloem and Vayum Arora, 8-1.
The same applied to Tim Cianciola and Mitchell Thai who were edged out by CMU's Daniel Levine and Chaz Downing, 9-7, and then defeated Boppana and Pinckney, 8-5. Also garnering wins were Akshat Agarwal and Jacob Dennen over Case Western's Josh Hsia and Varun Thachil (9-7), and Kevin Brown and Patrick McGuigan topping Zach Hennessey and Aaron Umen from Case, 8-4.
On the singles courts, the Big Red received 3-0 outings from McGuigan and Purnode. McGuigan defeated Allegheny's Wonjoon Cho (6-3, 6-4) and Colton Johnson-Taylor (7-6, 6-1) before taking down Hugo Chatras from Tiffin in a single set, 6-1.
Purnode's singles success came against Oberlin's Matt Gittings with a 5-7, 6-2, 10-5 three-set victory, back-to-back 6-3 set wins over BW's Matt Harris and a single 6-4 tally against Varun Thachil (Case Western).
Rotnov and Janczak also went undefeated for Denison, totaling two victories each, which included two wins for Rotnov over CWR's Sidd Rajupet and Robert Stroup. Janczak swept both sets against Tiffin's Ryan Gase, 6-0, 6-0, and then bested John Carroll's Jack Payne, 8-2. Cianciola, Thai, and Agarwal also finished with two victories each, going 2-1 during singles play.
Denison will round out their fall schedule next Friday through Sunday, September 28-30, when they compete in the ITA Central Regional in St. Louis, Missouri.
