The Big Red men's track & field team kicked off the 2015 schedule with an eighth-place finish at the annual Denison Lid-Lifter held inside the Mitchell Fieldhouse on the campus of Denison University.
Junior sprinter Quenton Richards led the charge for DU with three top-6 performances. Individually, Richards placed fifth in the 60-meter dash after crossing the line in 7.25. The junior was also part of two relay teams that helped the Big Red point total. In the 4x200 relay, the team of Ethan George, Ian Mulmat, Richard and Lucas Romick placed fourth with a time of 1:36.32. The collection of Mulmat, Michael Bonebrake, Richards and Romick also combined for a sixth-place performance in the 4x400 relay with a mark of 3:47.94.
Also providing points in multiple events were junior Ryan Keller and sophomore Zach Cove. Keller placed fifth in the mile after crossing the line in 4:37.18, while Cove checked in seventh in 4:38.25. The duo also ran the opening two legs of the third-place Distance Medley Relay team. The grouping of Ryan Keller, Cove, Mitch Keller and Jake Dennie combined for a time of 11:08.06.
Rounding out the scoring were jumper Wallace Branche and Lester Harris. Branche was runner-up in the triple jump after registering a leap of 46'1.25", which was only bested by Bethany's Umar Moore (46'4.75"). Harris finished fourth with a mark of 43'3".
Carnegie Mellon won the event with 111.50 points followed by Muskingum with 88. California (Pa.) was third with 71, while Wilmington (66) and Bethany (58) rounded out the top five spots in the 12-team field. Denison scored 40 points to place eighth.
The Big Red returns to action next weekend when they travel to The College of Wooster for the Fighting Scots Invitational. Events are scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
