PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Denison men's track and field team kicked off the 2017 outdoor season with a fourth-place finish at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational on Saturday after collecting 63 points.

On Friday night, freshman Bryce Stricker turned in the highlight performance of the weekend by breaking the school record in the hammer throw. In his first attempt, Stricker became the new record holder with a toss of 138'7" which was a 4'10" improvement on Steve Bedosky's record (2006). On his next try, the freshman bested his new record with a mark of 141'2" which landed him in fourth place overall. Stricker also took sixth in the shot put with a heave of 43'7". That performance landed him in 10th place on the school's top performers list.

Also landing on the top performer's list was freshman Ivan Maldonado after finishing second in the javelin. Maldonado finished runner-up with a toss of 167'8" which secured him the fifth spot on DU's list. Senior Drake Lohnes also turned in a personal-best performance in the javelin with a mark of 155'9". That distance earned him fourth-place points and was a 1'2" improvement on his previous PR.

In other field event action on Saturday, freshmen James Dixie and Jake Coplin scored in the triple and long jump events. Dixie placed third in the triple jump with a combined leap of 41'9.75", while Coplin's mark of 19'6.25" in the long jump earned him sixth place.

Isaac Reed also turned in a second-place finish in the 110 hurdles after crossing the line in 16.20, while Jack Ruddy finished third in the 400 hurdles with a final time of 1:01.51. Senior Michael Bonebrake was fourth in the 400-meter event with a time of 52.92, while Zach Cove's time of 2:02.43 earned him fifth place in the 800. Isaac Andrews (11.98) and Alex Chin (12.03) went 5-6 in the 100-meter dash, while Niall Clancey took fifth in the 5,000-meter run after crossing the line in 16:07.55.

In the 4x400 relay, the grouping of Andrews, Cove, Zach Munn and Ruddy placed second after crossing the finish line in 3:32.74. Andrews and Ruddy also teamed up with Chin and Coplin to take third in the 4x100 relay with a time of 44.88.

The host Tartans won the team title with 283 points, while Allegheny was second with 90 points. Waynesburg was third with 86, while Denison and Franciscan (27) rounded out the team standings.

The Big Red will be back in action next Saturday (April 1) at the Hilltop Classic hosted by Birmingham Southern College in Birmingham, Ala.
