SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- Denison's six-game winning streak came to an end after dropping a pair of North Coast Athletic Conference contests at Wittenberg on Tuesday at Betty Dillahunt Field. The Big Red suffered a 3-0 setback in game one before falling 5-3 in the finale.

In the opener, two-time reigning NCAC Pitcher of the Week Sarah Herold struck out a career-high 12 batters she faced but it wasn't enough as her counterpart, Chelsea Zang, kept Denison off the board for seven innings. Zang helped her own cause in the bottom of the first when she hit a two-out, two-run homer to put the Tigers in front. Casey Hobbs added an insurance in the fifth with a base hit that drove in Olivia Hopkins.

The Big Red brought the game-tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh, but a double play induced by Zang brought the game to an end. The game-ending double play was Wittenberg's third of the contest. Senior Ryan Lee had two of Denison's four hits, while Lauren Secaras and Laura Bagan each had a single. Herold fell to 8-3 on the season after surrendering three runs on three hits and a pair of free passes.

In game two, the Tigers jumped out to another first-inning lead following an RBI single. After a one-out double to center, Bagan came around to score the game-tying run on another double by freshman Lindsey Clemson. Two-base hits by Mckinly Vazquez and Lee in the third put DU ahead for the first time, 2-1. Hobbs evened the score once again with an RBI single to right.

The score remained tied until the home half of the fifth when Abby Curnutte knocked in a pair with a base hit to center. Curnutte scored one batter later on a misplayed ball in the infield. Freshman Charlotte Happel reached safely to open the seventh via an error at short. With two down, Herold plated Happel from second with a single to center.

Seven different Big Red hitters recorded a hit in the nightcap. Herold, Lee and Clemson all drove in a run, while Lee, Bagan, Clemson and Vazquez each recorded an extra-base hit. Senior Erin Laswell (5-3) took the loss after surrendering five runs (four earned) on six hits with five strikeouts.

The Big Red falls to 19-9 overall and 5-3 in conference play, while the Tigers are now 18-4 and a perfect 6-0 in the NCAC. Denison returns home on Saturday for an NCAC twinbill against Wooster on Saturday (April 15). Game one is slated to start at 1 p.m.
