Big Red improves to 23-9 after sweep of Capital

COLUMBUS, Ohio--  Denison traveled to nearby Capital University and left with a pair of wins to improve to 23-9.  Denison won game one, 7-4 and took the nightcap, 9-2.

In the opener, the Big Red jumped out to an early lead thanks to a pair of hits and a costly miscue in the first inning. Junior Sarah Herold opened the game with a double to left center before a base hit to right by Ryan Lee put runners at the corners with no outs. Herold came around to score the game's first run on a ball put in play by sophomore Ricki Asher.

In the home half of the third, the Crusaders pushed across three runs on the strength of five hits and an error. Capital maintained the lead until the fifth when Denison tied things up at 3-3. During Lee's at-bat, a wild pitch by Brianna Reardon allowed senior Kerry Hager to score. After Lee drew a walk to re-load the bases, a groundout to the pitcher by Asher drove in Mckinly Vazquez.

Following a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth for freshman Taryn Welch, the Big Red bats got back to work. With one out, Lindsey Clemson broke the tie with one swing of the bat. Clemson sent the first pitch she saw from Reardon over the center field wall for her first-career home run. Charlotte Happel and Hager followed the long ball with an infield single and a walk, respectively, before Vazquez belted her first career homer, a three-run shot, to extend DU's lead to 7-3.

Natalie Mabry cut into the deficit with a pinch-hit home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth. That long ball resulted in a series of defensive changes that moved junior Lauren Secaras into the pitching circle. Secaras went on to retire six of the eight batters she faced en route to her fifth career save. The junior saved the game for Welch (4-2) who gave up three earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts in five innings of work.

Secaras surrendered just one hit and struck out two. Offensively, Herold, Lee, Clemson, Happel and Vazquez had two hits apiece. Vazquez drove in three and scored two times, while Hager scored twice.

In game two, Denison put a run on the board in each of the first three innings.  Leading 3-2 heading to the fourth, Herold cleared the bases with the 3-run homer to left.  It was the fifth home run of the season for Herold and the 22nd for Denison in 2017.

Colleen Hoffman got the start and pitched four innings to pick up the win.  She improves to 3-1 on the season.  Secaras worked the final three innings of relief, earning her second save of the day.  With the save, Secaras became Denison's new career leader with six.

Secaras went 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI.  In all, DU pounded out 16 hits as seven players in the lineup posted multi-hit games.  Denison returns to action on Thursday (April 20) when they travel to Thomas More for a doubleheader set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
