GAMBIER, Ohio -- Denison women's basketball had their fourth-quarter rally cut short on Saturday afternoon as they lost a close one to Kenyon College, 48-46, at Tomsich Arena.

Despite holding the Ladies to 0-13 from the field in the final quarter, the Big Red were held scoreless in the final 1:55 of the game and Kenyon connected on their last five free throw attempts to pull away in the final seconds.

Trailing by as many as 11 through the first three-quarters of play, sophomore Alison Schafer buried a three for the Big Red to cut into Kenyon's lead, 41-37, with 6:25 remaining in the fourth.

With 4:25 to play, a turnover by Kenyon's Griffin Tullis started a 7-0 scoring run for DU. Senior Brittany Atkinson recorded a layup with 4:08 to go, and a missed shot for the Ladies gave the ball back to the Big Red where Valesha Province buried a shot from behind the arc. A bucket from Isabella Luaces rounded out the scoring run as Denison took a 44-43 lead with 2:54 remaining in the contest. The lead was DU's first since the 5:13 mark in the first quarter.

After Tullis and Paige Matijasich connected on Kenyon's next four free throws to take the lead 47-44, sophomore Lauren Hofer, who led the game with 14 points, cashed in on a layup to shrink Denison's deficit, 47-46, with less than two minutes to play in the game.

With 15 seconds remaining, a missed three-pointer from Kenyon's Ellie Schaub gave the ball back to the Big Red. After Denison called back-to-back timeouts, Atkinson had her shot blocked by Tullis and Kenyon's Lane Davis secured the rebound.

Following a foul from DU, Davis made her first free throw to give the Ladies a 48-46 lead with two seconds to play. A lane violation from Davis gave the ball back to the Big Red, but they were unable to attempt a final shot as Denison fell just short 48-46.

The Big Red were led by Hofer's game-high 14 points on 7-15 shooting, while Schafer contributed eight points and Province chipped in seven points off the bench. Sophomore Aliyah Hunter led the team with six rebounds and added four points.

Kenyon was paced by Jessica Gerber with 12 points, and Davis and Matijasich added nine points and nine rebounds each.

Denison will stay on the road next Wednesday, December 6 as they travel to Oberlin College for a tip-off with the Yeowomen at 7:30 p.m.
