Big Red holds off Tomcats

Erin Keller led DU with 5 ground balls and 5 caused turnovers.

The 2013 season is underway and Denison is off on the right foot following a 14-9 victory over Thiel College on Saturday afternoon.

Leading 6-4 with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half, the Big Red proceeded to go on a 5-0 run that stretched into the opening minutes of the season half.  That run would give DU a comfortable 11-4 advantage.  Despite being outscored 5-4 in the second half, the six-goal halftime deficit would be too much to overcome for the Tomcats.

Armed with a starting line-up that consisted of five sophomores, four first-year's, two seniors and just one junior, the youthful Big Red would force the Tomcats into 15 of their 31 turnovers on the day. Sophomore Erin Keller stepped into the role left behind by All-American Carly Tschantz in 2012, and Keller would post four draw controls, five ground balls and five caused turnovers.  She also notched two goals off six shot attempts.

Denison's leading scorer was Molly Chapman who tallied four goals and one assist.  Whitney Powel and Kelsey Wright both scored a pair of goals and the duo combined for five caused turnovers.

Junior Lauren Adams would score one goal and one assist while tying with Keller for the team lead in draws with four.

Thiel was led in scoring by Emily Harrigan's three goals and one assist.  Cassy Mahdi scored two goals and one assist to go along with her five ground balls and game-high nine draw controls.

In the cage, Thiel's Asia Wallace ended with 11 saves while Denison's Grace Bodenmann posted two saves in 50 minutes of action.

The Big Red will return to action next Sunday (March 3) when they host Colorado College at 11 a.m. in Granville.
