Denison tops Adrian in season opener

Whitney Powel stuffed the stat sheet in the win over Adrian.
Whitney Powel stuffed the stat sheet in the win over Adrian.

The 2014 women's lacrosse season got underway on Saturday with a 23-12 victory over Adrian College from Sewanee, Tenn.  Denison first-year Claire Ludlow scored four goals off just five shot attempts and Molly Chapman finished with two goals and four assists as the Big Red moved to 1-0 on the young season.

DU took a 4-1 lead early in the contest thanks to a pair of goals by Erin Keller and scores from Chapman and Ludow.  The Bulldogs would rally with three-straight goals, trimming the Big Red lead to 6-5 with just over eight minutes to play.  Denison would respond by scoring eight of the next nine goals scored.  That would give DU a commanding 14-6 advantage early in the second half, which would be plenty to hold off the Bulldogs.

Whitney Powel turned in an outstanding all-around performance.  The junior scored three goals and added one assist off three shot attempts. She also led the team with five draw controls, five ground balls and two caused turnovers.  Chapman tied Powel for the team lead in draw controls with five.

Laura Van Horn got the start in goal for Denison and finished with three saves in 60 minutes.  Adrian's Jul Tehovnik ended with six saves.

Denison will return to action on Sunday when they face Sewanee at 1 p.m.
