Augustana's six-goal lead in the second half evaporated thanks to a spirited run by the Big Red, but when the clock struck zero, the Vikings had managed to hold on for a 15-14 win over Denison in Rock Island, Ill.
Augustana, who remained undefeated at 8-0 with the win, utilized a 4-0 run late in the first half to take a 10-4 lead over the Big Red. The Vikings would maintain a 4-6 goal advantage until the latter half of the second period. That's when Denison put together a run of its own.
With 16:51 to play, Claire Ludlow scored her second goal of the day getting Denison to within five at 14-9. Just over two minutes later, Carol Allen posted her team-leading fourth goal of the contest off a pass from Kelsey Wright. The run would continue with a goal by Erin Keller, and finally another score by Ludlow had DU knocking on the door at 14-12 with 10:55 left.
One minute after Ludlow's goal got Denison to within two, Augustana's Kelly Stelzer scored to put her team back up three.
Denison looked unfazed by the Augie goal as Molly Chapman found Keller for her second goal of the half with 8:40 to play. With just under six minutes left it looked as if DU was going to get even closer, until Ludlow's 8-meter attempt was turned away by Augustana goalie Sarah Osier.
Possession would bounce back and forth over the next five minutes until Elsie Humes scored via a pass from Whitney Powel with 44 seconds left. DU would control the ensuing draw, but second later a turnover would negate any opportunity to tie the game as Augustana cleared the ball as time expired to complete the 15-14 win.
The Vikings outshot Denison 34-26 and ended with 21 ground balls to the Big Red's 16. DU committed 25 turnovers but Laura Van Horn posted a game-high eight saves in goal.
Allen paced the Denison offense with four goals. Lauren Adams and Ludlow each scored three goals, while Keller ended with two tallies. Powel led with four draw controls while Chapman followed with three draw controls, two assists and one goal.
Stelzer and Rebecca Pollard led Augustana with four goals apiece. Osier posted a team-high five saves in 22 minutes of action, and Kaylee Nolan led all players with 12 draw controls.
Denison falls to 5-3 and will return to North Coast Athletic Conference play on Sunday (April 6) when they take on DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. The opening draw is scheduled for 12 p.m.
