Denison hands Centre second loss

Reid Hirschey posted a hat trick in Denison's 14-5 win over Centre.
Reid Hirschey posted a hat trick in Denison's 14-5 win over Centre.

Centre College entered Wednesday's non-conference clash with the Big Red with a sparkling 12-1 record, but they left Granville 12-2 following a 14-5 Denison win.

It was a dominating first half by the Big Red that sent a message to the upstart Colonels early on.  Denison held a 2-1 lead after the opening five minutes of play.  With 22 minutes left in the half, Carol Allen scored her second goal of the contest off another pass from Molly Chapman and that would start a 7-0 run by the Big Red over the next 11 minutes of play.  By the time Centre got back on the scoreboard with 5:31 left in the half, they found themselves trailing 9-2.

Centre committed 18 turnovers in the first half and struggled to a .677 clearing percentage for the game.

Chapman paced Denison with two goals, four assists, and seven draw controls.  Possession heavily favored DU as they won 17 of 21 draws taken in the match.  For Chapman, the junior now has 97 career goals and 93 career assists.  She is on pace to become the first 100 goal, 100 assist player in Denison lacrosse history.

First-year Reid Hirschey led Denison with three goals.  Allen finished with three goals and one assist, while Elsie Humes, Lizzy Pellicane, Lauren Adams, Piper Logan, and Whitney Powel each scored one goal.  Laura Van Horn played the first 30 minutes on goal, finishing with three saves.  Ansley Gibson posted one save while working the second half in the cage for DU.

Centre's Allison Eisner finished with 12 saves in 60 minutes played for the Colonels.

Denison improves to 7-3 and will host Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday (April 12) at 1 p.m.  The Battling Bishops are 6-6 and coming off a 10-9 loss to Oberlin on this afternoon.
