Denison rallies for win over Wooster
Denison outscored Wooster 9-4 in the second half to complete a 13-9 victory over the Fighting Scots from a chilly Piper Stadium in Granville, Ohio.
The two teams played throw snow flurries and dipping temperatures through most of the game but five consecutive goals by the Big Red would things up for the home team. After a goal by Wooster's Shelby Stone five minutes into the second half, the Fighting Scots found themselves with a 6-4 lead over the home team.
DU would respond 30 seconds later with a goal by Whitney Powel assisted by Elsie Humes. That would spark a streak of five-straight Denison goals over the next 15 minutes of play. With 10 minutes remaining the Big Red held a 9-6 advantage but the Scots would not go quietly.
With 8:32 left, Wooster's Ellie Hudson-Heck scored her fifth goal of the game off a pass from Eliza Perry. Wooster would win the ensuing draw and after a foul on the Big Red, Abby Szlachta converted the free position attempt which cut Denison's lead to one with 8:03 to play.
Less than a minute later, DU attack Molly Chapman went to the cage on her free position attempt and scored her first goal of the match, giving her squad some much needed breathing room in the process.
Chapman's goal would spark another Big Red run as the next four goals would come from the home team, allowing Denison to take a 13-8 lead with just over four minutes to play.
A sixth goal from Wooster's Hudson-Heck with 4:02 left would set the final at 13-9.
Powel paced Denison with three goals, five draw controls, and one caused turnover. Lauren Adams tallied five points thanks to her two goal, three assist effort. Also scoring two goals apiece was Carol Allen and Reid Hirschey.
Denison held a 26-19 advantage on shots. They also finished with a 17-7 lead in draw controls. Turnovers plagued both squads, as Wooster finished with 25 and the Big Red ended with 23. Both starting goalies, Laura Van Horn for Denison and Isabel Perman for Wooster, ended with six saves apiece.
