MEADVILLE, Pa. – Allegheny's Shannon McGuinn scored four minutes into the match and Kelli Gaus added a second goal in the 13th minute as the Gators defeated Denison 2-1 in their North Coast Athletic Conference opener on Saturday afternoon.

For the match's first goal, McGuinn took a shot from 30 yards out that beat Denison's keeper Jenny Herold in the upper righthand corner of the net. Nine minutes later, Gaus received a cross from Hannah Smith and finished it in goal to give Allegheny an early 2-0 lead.

Denison's Kelly O'Neill finished a corner kick in the 68th minute to cut the deficit in half, but Allegheny's goalkeeper Maya Hackman recorded an impressive day to keep the DU offense at bay. In a full 90 minutes of action, Hackman totaled 11 saves as the Big Red outshot the Gators 25-10 on the afternoon. On the other side of the pitch, Herold recorded one save for Denison in a full match effort.

The Big Red will return to Barclay-Thomsen Field on Wednesday, Sept. 27 when they host Westminster College at 7 p.m.
