YPSILANTI, Mich.--  No. 2 ranked Denison women's swimming & diving traveled north to take on Division I Eastern Michigan University and suffered a 156-133 loss.  The Big Red posted four event wins and 10 runner-up finishes against the Eagles.

Sophomore Maddie Hopkins came within .19 of posting an NCAA 'B' cut time in the 100 butterfly.  She won the event with a time of 56.97 and her teammate, Zoe Whelan finished second in 57.73.  Hopkins placed eighth in the 100 fly at last year's Division III championship.

Whelan recorded Denison's first win of the afternoon with a victory in the 200 fly after touching the wall in 2:08.16.  Whelan already has her 'B' cut after last week's 2:05.51 at Akron.

KT Kustritz continued her impressive start to the season as she lowered her 'B' cut time in the 200 breaststroke after a second-place showing in 2:20.01.  Last week at Akron, Kustritz posted a 'B' cut time of 2:20.50.  She also finished second in the 100 breast against EMU and was just .01 shy of her season-best provisional qualifying time after touching in 1:02.81.

In both breaststroke events, Kate Mesaros placed third.  She logged a time of 1:05.92 in the 100 and finished in 2:23.98 in the 200 breast.

Hannah Rusinko was the runner-up in the 500 free in 5:11.35 and also posted a fourth-place finish in the 200 free (1:58.13).  In the sprint freestyle events, Hopkins placed fourth in the 50 in 25.19 and Mia Chiappe was the runner-up in the 100 free in 53.68.  Michaela Morrison followed in third with a time of 54.64.

In the 1000 freestyle, Grace Kacmarek led DU with a fourth-place finish in 10:45.77 while Natalie Zaravella followed in fifth in 10:45.87.  She returned in the 200 IM to post a time of 2:12.06 while Mesaros followed in 2:13.38.

In the backstroke events, Casey Kirby and Jacquelyn Kurkjian paced the Big Red.  Kirby finished second in the 200 back in 2:09.62 and Kurkjian was third in 2:09.83.  The duo finished fifth and sixth, respectively in the 100.

In the diving events, Allison Fitzgerald led Denison with two second-place showings.  On the 3-meter board, Fitzgerald recorded a six-dive score of 224.41.  Emma Weber was third at 198.90 followed by Naomi Clayton in fourth at 193.73 and Mattie Stauss in fifth at 187.81.  Results were similar on the 1-meter board where Fitzgerald was second at 235.95 followed by Clayton (205.81), Weber (200.55) and Stauss (192.60).

There were two relays and Denison's team of Kirby, Kustritz, Hopkins, and Chiappe placed second in the 200 medley relay (1:46.26) and won the 400 free relay in 3:32.20.

Denison's next competition will be on Friday (Nov. 2) against Ohio State at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
