GAMBIER, Ohio -- Rainie Heck's three-set victory at No. 6 singles lifted Oberlin to a 5-4 victory over Denison in the third-place match of the 2017 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament on Sunday.

After falling behind 2-0 in doubles play, the sophomore tandem of Lauren Hawley and Emma Alsup cut the deficit in half with an 8-5 decision at the top flight. That victory over Emma Brezel and Sarah Hughes marks the duo's 21st win of the season and 15th at the No. 1 position.

The Yeowomen rebuilt a two-point lead following a victory at third singles, but back-to-back wins by Alsup and Ashley Hammons evened the score at 3-3. Alsup earned her second win of the day with a straight-set decision (6-3, 6-1) over Brezel at the second flight, while a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Lena Rich by Hammons at No. 4 singles squared the match.

A Hughes win at first singles put Oberlin one point away from victory. Sophomore Charlotte Purnode kept the match going with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Jackie McDermott, setting the stage for a dramatic finish at the sixth flight.

Heck edged out a hard-fought 7-6 decision in the opening set via 8-6 tiebreaker. Junior Carol Vitellas rebounded strongly with a dominant 6-1 victory, forcing a winner-take-all third set. In a tightly contested affair, Heck pulled out a 6-4 win to garner third place for Oberlin.

The Big Red's season comes to an end with a record of 9-12. Oberlin finished the year with a 13-12 mark.
