OBERLIN, Ohio – Denison women's tennis traveled to Oberlin, Ohio this past weekend to take part in the 2017 ITA Central Regional Championships. The Big Red competed with individuals from 22 different schools in both singles and doubles play.
On the singles courts, Denison was led by junior Lauren Hawley who went 2-1 for the tournament with wins over Sydney Bergman of Otterbein University (6-0, 6-4) and Case Western Reserve's Mira Amin (6-4, 7-5). Hawley advanced to the round of 16 before dropping a 6-2, 6-1 match to Weronika Halicka (Illinois Tech).
Freshman Devin Gramley went 1-1 during the weekend, opening her tournament with a 7-6, 7-5 win over Gaby DeLeon of Allegheny College. Gramley earned a spot in the second round but fell to John Carroll's Lauren O'Malley 6-0, 6-1. Additionally, junior Megan Hickey and freshman Madeline Hart added two more singles wins for DU, going 1-2 for the tournament and each earning victories in the consolation round.
In doubles play, the Big Red was led by the pair of Hawley and Hickey who went 2-1 for the tournament and advanced to the third round after defeating Claudia Olaes and Lena Rich (Oberlin) 8-3.
Gramley and Hart totaled one doubles victory for the Big Red while the pair of Charlotte Purnode and Carol Vitellas advanced to the second round after defeating Katie Curry and Ola Latala of Ohio Northern University 8-5 in the opening round.
Denison is scheduled to return to action on Feb. 9 when they travel to Cleveland, Ohio for a match with the University of Chicago.
