GRANVILLE, Ohio – Highlighted by a combined 23 kills from Emma Woerner and Alex Tubbs, Denison volleyball continued to improve on their North Coast Athletic Conference tournament standings after defeating the College of Wooster 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-13) on Wednesday night at Livingston Gymnasium.

On a night that began with honoring the careers of seniors Ellie Blue, Mary Massarelli, Julia Miller, and Isabella Pivec, the Big Red took command in the first set with a .225 hit percentage compared to Wooster's -.047. After opening the match with three consecutive points, DU jumped out to a six-point advantage, 12-6, thanks to kills from Woerner and freshman Payton McElfresh.

Four-straight errors from the Scots put Denison ahead 20-10 and the Big Red finished the set with five of the next eight points on back-to-back strikes from Tubbs and Woerner.

Leading one set to none, Denison recovered from an early 7-4 deficit in the second set to take 12 of the next 16 points on five combined kills from McElfresh and Woerner as the Big Red jumped ahead, 16-11. That momentum continued throughout the set for DU as they collected their highest kill percentage of the night (.303) and kills from Miller and McElfresh helped Denison enter the final set with a two-set advantage.

Tied at 9-9 in the third set, six Wooster errors and a kill from Tubbs gave DU a 17-10 lead. Collecting eight of the final 11 points of the match on kills from Woerner and freshman Olivia Burnside, the Big Red secured their seventh sweep of the season and leaped the Scots for the No. 6 seed in the 2018 NCAC Tournament beginning next Friday, November 2. Winning their final home match of the regular season, Denison improved to 10-14 overall and 3-5 in the NCAC while Wooster dropped to 13-11 and 2-6 in conference play.

Woerner finished with a match-high 13 kills, while Tubbs posted 10 kills and a match-best .429 hit percentage and six blocks. Miller paced the Big Red with 30 assists and 15 digs. McElfresh chipped in eight kills and 10 digs, and freshman libero Marija Pavlick led all players with 18 digs.

The Scots were led by Ashley Plassard's eight kills and Gabrielle Basinski added 11 digs. Meghan Botsch finished with a team-high 18 assists.

Before heading to Wittenberg next Friday for the NCAC Tournament, the Big Red will round out the regular season on Saturday, October 27 when they travel to Bexley, Ohio to take on the Crusaders of Capital University at 1 p.m.
