GRANVILLE, Ohio-- The Denison men's and women's golf teams are currently ranked in the top-25 of their respective Division III polls. The Denison women are ranked 21st in the Women's Golf Coaches Association Coaches Poll. The Denison men are 22nd in the most recent Bushnell Golfweek Division III poll. This is the first time that both programs have been ranked in the top-25, simultaneously.
The Denison women's golf team won three of the five tournaments they competed in this fall. Emmy Timberlake took home medalist honors, twice while Megan Wong set a new varsity record with a 3-under-par, 69 in the final round of the Ohio Wesleyan Fall Invitational. The Big Red's average 18-hole team score was 314 while Timberlake led all players with a 76.4 scoring average. DU's top four players, Timberlake, Laine Hursh (78.6), Wong (78.6), and Sophia Alexander (79.0) boasted scoring averages in the 70s.
The Big Red men's golf team won the Centre Fall Invitational and were the runner-up at the Virtues Fall Shootout highlighting a fall season that saw them post a 293.6 18-hole team scoring average. Christian Early posted a 72.3 scoring average in 11 rounds. He was followed closely by Marc Mitchell at 72.6 and Ben Scherman at 74.3. The men fired an 18-hole team total of 286, twice and Sam Davis, Mitchell, and Scherman all captured NCAC Athlete of the Week honors.
Both Denison golf programs are coached by Lauren Grogan, who is in her first season leading the Big Red. She came to Denison after two seasons at the head men's and women's golf coach at Aquinas College in Michigan. Grogan was a four-year letter winner at the University of Michigan where she competed in four Big Ten Championships and one NCAA Regional. Grogan was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree who posted a career average of 77.46. Assistant coach Robby Pickett joined the staff in August after two years as a graduate assistant at Ohio Dominican University. Pickett, a 2016 graduate of Allegheny College, was a three-time medalist and a first-team all-conference selection. He was named Allegheny's SAAC Male Athlete of the Year in 2016.
Denison begins is spring season in March with the women traveling to Memphis for the Rhodes College Invitational on March 29-30. The men open in Wilmington, North Carolina on April 3-5 at the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate. Both teams will compete at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships on May 1-3 at Westbrook Country Club in Mansfield, Ohio.
