ATHENS, Ohio--  Denison improved to 6-1 after a doubleheader sweep of Wilmington College on Saturday at Bob Wren Stadium on the campus of Ohio University.

Denison took game one by a final score of 7-3 behind a stellar pitching performance by Danny Brackman.  In game two, the Big Red prevailed 16-8 in a slugfest as the two teams combined for 30 hits, 24 runs while 47 different players took the field.

Senior centerfielder Nick Pettigrew had an outstanding day at the plate. Combined, he was 5-for-7 with two home runs, four RBIs and six runs scored.  He also stole a base and walked once.

In the opener, Brian McAuliffe got Denison going with a solo homer in the first.  Wilmington responded with two runs in the second but the Big Red came right back in the home half of the inning when Pettigrew blasted his first of two home runs of the day over the wall in left, scoring Daniel Spencer giving Denison a 3-2 lead.

After struggling in the second, Brackman settled in for Denison, retiring 14-straight Quakers that spanned the final out of the second inning and lasted until the seventh.  Brackman pitched 8.0 innings, scattering five hits and two earned runs while striking out seven to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Jarrett Trautman took the loss for Wilmington. He got the start and allowed six earned runs off seven hits in 3.2 innings pitched.  DU slugged three home runs as McAuliffe, Pettigrew and Will Krushena all left the yard.

In game two, the Big Red took a 6-0 lead thanks to a five-run first and a solo homer by Pettigrew in the second.  Two more runs in the fourth put Denison on top 8-1 and three innings of one-run relief work by John Troll allowed DU to take a commanding lead.

Wilmington did respond with seven runs between the fifth and sixth innings to get back into the contest but Denison's offense kept plugging right along, plating three in the fifth, two in the sixth and three more in the seventh to put the game away.

Max Lahn was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.  Cam Farren was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and Pettigrew finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and four runs scored.

Troll earned the victory in relief of starter Will McManaman.  Wilmington starter Lance Fleischman took the loss, dropping to 1-2 on the season.

Denison moves to 6-1 overall and 12-4 all-time against Wilmington College.  The Quakers fall to 1-7.
