OBERLIN, Ohio – Denison baseball set a new program record for wins in a season on Wednesday afternoon following a doubleheader sweep of Oberlin College at Dill Field. Following a 13-9 win in game one and an 18-8 victory in game two, the Big Red moved to 33-5 on the season, breaking the previous record of 32 wins set by last year's squad that finished the 2018 season at 32-12.
In game one, Danny Brackman took the hill and made it through the first two innings unscathed before running into trouble in the third. With Denison leading 6-0, the Yeomen responded with seven runs in the bottom of the third. The Big Red ripped the lead back from Oberlin in the top of the fourth thanks to RBI singles by Grady Paine, Ty Robinson, and Will Krushena. Vince Walker drew a bases-loaded walk to score the fourth run of the frame, sending DU into the bottom of the fourth with a 10-6 lead.
Oberlin threatened again in the bottom of the fifth. With two runners on and one run already on the board, Denison turned to reliever John Troll. He induced a force out at home plate before getting Brendan Mapes to ground out to end the threat. Troll pitched the final four innings, scattering four hits without allowing a run. He earned the win in relief to improve to 6-0 on the season.
The Big Red pounded out 21 hits in the opener led by four-hit games by Robinson and Krushena. Robinson was 4-for-6 with two home runs and four RBIs. Krushena was 4-for-5 with a walk and two RBIs. Anthony Ruggieri was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Max Lahn raised his gaudy .474 batting average a few points by going 3-for-5 with a walk and two runs scored.
Oberlin reliever David Gaetano took the loss, dropping to 1-2 on the season.
The Denison bats followed their game-one performance with 18 runs on 20 hits in game two, highlighted by six runs each in the third and fourth innings.
Despite the Yeomen taking a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second, RBI base hits from Paine, Robinson, and Brian McAuliffe helped the Big Red take a 4-3 lead in the top of the third. DU's explosive inning was capped off by junior Brad Baldinger who connected on a two-run home run over the left centerfield wall to put Denison ahead 6-3 entering the home half of the third.
Oberlin cut the Denison lead to 6-4 after three innings of action, but the Big Red offense tacked on six more runs in the fourth thanks to RBI singles from Krushena, Baldinger, and Cam Farren, along with a stolen base at home from Robinson.
The Yeomen added RBIs from Lawrence Hamilton and Alexis Castillo in the bottom of the fourth, but RBI doubles from Robinson and McAuliffe helped DU post five runs in the fifth and shortened the game to seven innings with the double-digit lead.
Baldinger and Farren each went 4-for-4 in game two, combining for five runs scored. Baldinger and McAuliffe also tied for the game-high with five RBIs each. Robinson went 2-for-4 with four runs scored and two RBIs, giving him six RBIs and seven runs scored on the day. Lahn went 2-for-4 with two runs and Krushena added two runs and a run driven in, giving him 62 RBIs for the season. He is now one RBI away from tying the program's single-season record of 63 held by Drew Shamrock (2004).
The Big Red will close out the regular season on Saturday (May 4) when they host Wabash College for an NCAC doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
