GRANVILLE, Ohio – On the heels of a record-breaking 39-win campaign in 2019, Denison baseball added to their preseason accolades on Wednesday as junior shortstop Max Lahn was named to the D3baseball.com Preseason All-America first-team while senior third baseman Brian McAuliffe followed as an honorable mention selection.
Lahn earned All-Mideast Region first-team honors by D3baseball.com and second-team recognition from the ABCA after posting a breakout season in 2019. Proving to be a consistent everyday player for the Big Red as a sophomore, Lahn led the team with a .439 batting average while setting new school records for hits (75) and walks (39) in a single season. He also added 38 RBIs and 11 stolen bases while posting a .538 on-base percentage that ranked 10th overall in all of Division III. The reigning All-NCAC first-team selection reached base safely in 36-straight games and recorded 27 multi-hit games in 2019.
McAuliffe also debuts as a Preseason All-American after helping Denison capture their first North Coast Athletic Conference championship in program history in 2019. A first-team All-Mideast Region (D3baseball.com & ABCA) and All-NCAC selection as a junior, McAuliffe notched career-highs in hits (54), runs (38), triples (4), home runs (10), and RBIs (48) while hitting .329 and leading the team in slugging at .616. A native of Tuckahoe, N.Y., McAuliffe enters his senior campaign with 94 RBIs and 15 home runs while hitting .305 for his career.
Finishing last season with an impressive record of 39-9 overall and 14-4 in the NCAC, the Big Red won a school-record 17-straight games while capturing the program's first-ever NCAC Tournament Championship. The team advanced to the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament for the second time in school history, capturing its first postseason victory against La Roche. In only seven seasons at the helm, head coach Mike Deegan became the program's career leader in wins with a record of 192-102 (.653).
The Big Red will look to improve on their 2019 success when they open the 2020 season on Saturday, February 29 with a doubleheader at Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky. Game one is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. with game two to follow at 3 p.m.
