CLEVELAND, Ohio – Denison's senior quarterback Canaan Gebele was named the North Coast Athletic Conference's Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Big Red to a 52-27 victory at Oberlin College on Saturday afternoon. This ranks as the fourth NCAC Offensive Player of the Week award for Gebele during his career.
Highlighted by 239 yards and four touchdowns through the air, the Annapolis, Md. native also led the DU ground attack with 60 yards rushing on 18 carries and a score. Gebele then recorded the first touchdown reception of his career on a 6-yard "Philly Special" passing play from senior wide receiver David Weimar. Gebele finished the day with 305 yards of total offense and six touchdowns.
Gebele currently ranks third in career passing yards at Denison with 6,087 yards. He needs 459 yards to pass Max Paulus (2009-12) as the all-time leader in program history. In the win over Oberlin, Gebele became the first player in Denison history to surpass 8,000 yards of total offense. Already the program's all-time leader in the category, he has 8,064 yards entering this week's clash with No. 14 Wittenberg. Former Ohio Wesleyan quarterback and current Denison assistant coach, Mason Espinosa is the NCAC's career leader in total offense with 10,839 yards.
Denison returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 29 for a 7 p.m. showdown with Tigers at Piper Stadium.
