DANVILLE, Ky. – After a shutout victory over Transylvania on Saturday, Denison field hockey suffered their first setback of the season, falling to Centre College, 2-0.
Despite junior Lucy Pearsall's four shots, two of which were on goal, the Colonels outshot the Big Red 12-1 in the first half and eliminated any penalty corner shots for Denison heading into the intermission.
Centre scored in the 29th minute when sophomore Savannah Elpers capitalized on a pass from Olivia Carter to take a 1-0 lead into the second half. Elpers also led all players with four shots on goal and tied for the lead in total shots.
The Colonels took 20 shots for the game, but freshman goalie Teya Adams had a strong outing for the Big Red. In her first full game of action, Adams totaled eight saves and defended 10 shots on goal. On the other side, Centre's Kristen Mulcahy defended three shots on goal and recorded a clean sheet for the Colonels.
A second half goal from junior Emily Schank sealed the victory for Centre.
The Big Red will make their home debut on Saturday, Sept. 9 when they play host to DePauw University at Deeds Field in a match set to begin at 11 a.m.
