MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Despite Matt Doyle's 10 points in the final 2:15 of play and DU's 54.8 shooting percentage in the second half, Denison men's basketball suffered a 98-95 loss at Allegheny College on Saturday afternoon at the Wise Center in Meadville, Pa.
The Big Red tied a program-record with 17 three-pointers and outperformed the opposing bench 47-26, but the Gators shot 56.6 percent for the game and turned 15 Denison turnovers into 20 points as they outscored DU 62-52 in the second half.
Tied at 72-72 with 6:12 remaining in the game, freshman Matt Redmond answered with a three for the Big Red that put DU in front, 75-72. The Gators followed with a pair of free throws from Brian Roberts, Jr., but on the next possession, junior Jack Coulter buried one of his five threes on the day to increase DU's lead to 78-74 with less than five minutes to play.
Over the next 46 seconds of action, Allegheny's Jordan Rawls combined for five points to bring the Gators within one, 80-79 at the 4:01 mark in the second half.
Following an AC timeout and a missed layup from Jake Livingston, Roberts, Jr. tallied one of his three perimeter jumpers on the day to give the Gators their first lead, 82-80, in nearly eight minutes of game action.
With 3:11 remaining in the game, a foul from Allegheny's Caden Hinckley sent Livingston to the line where he tallied both of his free throws and tied the game at 82-82. On the next possession, Rawls went back to the rim to total the sixth lead change of the game and put the Gators back in front, 84-82.
Trailing 86-82 in the final three minutes of action, Doyle buried two of his four three-pointers in less than two minutes to bring DU within three, 91-88, with 37 seconds remaining.
Coming out of the Big Red timeout, the Gators gave the ball back to Roberts, Jr. who finished a three-point play at the rim off a Denison foul. Allegheny's six-point lead was shortened to three when Doyle was fouled shooting from the perimeter and connected on all three of his shots at the charity stripe.
Back-to-back pairs of free throws from Billy Urso and Hinckley increased the AC lead to 98-91 with 10 seconds remaining. After Doyle was fouled and he hit his first free throw, he missed the second attempt and gathered the rebound, immediately passing it off to Coulter who tallied his fifth three of the game and cut the DU deficit to 98-95. The Big Red were unable to attempt another shot as they fell to 5-9 on the season. Allegheny improved to 6-8 on the year.
Denison was led by Doyle's 20 points and four assists, including 18 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the perimeter in the second half. Coulter followed with 19 points on 5-of-11 shooting from three.
