DELAWARE, Ohio – Ohio Wesleyan's Ethan Stanislawski posted a game-high 24 points as the Bishops defeated the Big Red 83-71 on Saturday afternoon at Branch Rickey Arena.
Despite the Bishops shooting 54 percent from the field in the first half, it was Denison that carried the lead midway through the opening frame. Five-straight points from Nate Haller helped the Big Red recover from an early 13-8 deficit, and after Fred Brou and Conor Fenton combined for the next three triples, DU saw their lead build to 22-16 with 9:50 to go before the break.
Over the next four minutes of action, the momentum shifted back to the home side after OWU rattled off a 14-1 scoring run behind nine combined points from Grant Gossard and Nick Carlson to take a 30-23 lead. DU's Jack Coulter followed with a three-pointer to trim the Big Red deficit back to four, 30-26, but the Bishops remained in the driver's seat for the rest of the first half as they entered the half with a 44-34 lead.
Trailing 50-37 in the early minutes of the second half, Denison responded with a three from Haller and back-to-back layups from Fenton and Freeman Brou to make it a six-point game, 50-44, at the 14:02 mark.
The Big Red rally brought OWU's lead back to single digits, but a bucket from Grant Spicer and a triple from Stanislawski built the Bishop lead to 11, 55-44, with 12:24 to play in the game.
Denison finished the second half shooting 50 percent from the field (13-of-26), but Ohio Wesleyan continued to hold their lead in the double-digits for the remainder of the game as they secured their eighth win of the season and moved to 3-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. The Big Red moved to 4-9 on the season and 1-5 in conference play.
