GRANVILLE, Ohio-- Denison rallied from a 12 point second half deficit to knock off DePauw, 65-64 on Wednesday at Livingston Gymnasium. The win clinched a spot in next week's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. It also extended the Big Red's home winning streak to five games.
Things didn't look good for Denison early in the second half as the Tigers opened the period on a 9-0 run to build a 39-27 lead. Two 3-pointers by Jack Coulter and one by Conor Fenton got DU back into the game and trailing by only three with 14:50 to play.
Coulter finished the game with 16 points was brilliant down the stretch, coming through with timely 3-pointers to keep his team above water. With 2:31 to play, DePauw's Nick Felke scored on a 10-footer in the paint to go up four. Denison missed at the other end, but a 3-seconds call on DePauw gave the ball back to Denison, trailing by four with 1:36 remaining. After a timeout, Denison drew up a play that got Coulter some space and the senior knocked down his fourth triple of the game to make it 62-61 with 1:21 left.
With 52 seconds left, DePauw's 3-pointer was off the mark and Coulter was fouled on the rebound attempt. He went to the line and sank both to give DU its first lead of the game with 49 seconds remaining. The lead was short-lived when seconds later Nolan Ginther was fouled and sent to the line where he made both. The Big Red executed at the other end when Freeman Brou hit a cutting Fenton who finished at the rum with 19 seconds left to take the lead back at 65-64.
DePauw had one last chance and Felke's potential game-winner was off the mark. There was a put-back attempt for the Tigers that went in, but the basket was waved off by the officials, noting that the shot occurred after the clock hit zero.
Coulter scored all 16 of his points in the second half. He was 5-of-12 and 4-of-10 from long range. In the second half, he was 4-of-7 on 3-point tries and 5-of-9 from the field.
