Denison University recently added its 50th NCAA Postgraduate scholar this past week when 2019 men's lacrosse graduate Tommy McMaster '19 was the recipient of a $10,000 award.

McMaster, a native of Novi, Mich., graduated in May with a B.A. in History and will be using his scholarship to study medicine at the University of Toledo. This past season, McMaster was honored as a President's Medalist at Denison while also receiving the Dr. Larry Scheiderer Award, which goes to the highest-ranking male varsity scholar-athlete at Denison. In 2017, 2018, 2019, McMaster was honored at the Denison Top-50 Scholar-Athlete Celebration, as well as being named to the NCAC Academic Honor Roll in each of those three years.

"We are all very proud and happy for Tommy to receive this prestigious award," said Denison head men's lacrosse coach Mike Caravana. "In my over 30 years of college coaching at Brown, Virginia, and here at Denison, no one had been more deserving of this scholarship and recognition then Tommy."

As a member of the men's lacrosse team at Denison, McMaster appeared in 63 games for the Big Red on defense while collecting 48 ground balls, 27 caused turnovers, and three goals. McMaster also helped Denison secure three North Coast Athletic Conference championships, four NCAC Tournament titles, and reached the NCAA Tournament in each of his four years in Granville.

"Being named a President's Medalist, team captain, and contributing on the field for top-10 nationally ranked teams in all four years is a top-notch accomplishment," said Caravana. "This certainly puts him in a very elite category of being one of the most successful student-athletes in Denison athletics history. It was an absolute pleasure to work with and coach a young man of Tommy's caliber.  Very few come along like him."

The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Program was created in 1964 to honor outstanding student-athletes from NCAA member institutions. The NCAA awards scholarships of $10,000 each year to student-athletes who have excelled academically and athletically and are in the final season of intercollegiate varsity athletic competition. The student must carry a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, be a distinct member of a varsity team, intend to enroll in a graduate degree program and be an outstanding citizen.
