CLEVELAND, Ohio ⎯ Denison women's fencing competed at the Cleveland State University Duals this past weekend at the Woodling Gym on CSU's campus in Cleveland, Ohio. The women's team went 3-3 overall, with scoring victories against Oakland (27-0), Carnegie Mellon (21-6), and Case Western (21-6).
Denison's women's epée squad achieved an impressive sweep of the University of Michigan in Saturday's team competition, going 9-0 on the day. Senior Hayley LeBlanc led the squad with a 10-5 record overall. Junior Diyanshu Emandi shined as well with an 8-6 record on the day. Emandi was also able to snag 13th place in Sunday's women's epée individual event.
In foil action, freshman Nina de Laperouse powered through with an overall 8-3 record on the day for Saturday's team competition. Teammates Tianying Zhang and Jocelyn Baeza combined for six wins on the day, impressive stats for the foil squad's newest additions. In Sunday's individual competition, de Laperouse finished seventh overall.
In sabre, junior Sé DiFilippo tallied an outstanding 6-2 record overall in the team event. In the women's individual sabre event, sophomore Shivika Churiwalla fought her way to the leaderboard, earning a bronze medal in the event.
The Denison women's fencing team will return to action on Sunday, November 10 when they travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. to take part in the Vassar Invitational.
