EVANSTON, Ill. ⎯ Denison women's fencing headed west this past weekend to compete at the Northwestern Mega-Meet hosted by Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. The team went 3-7 overall, with wins against Detroit Mercy (17-10), Lawrence (14-13), and Wayne State (16-11), as well as a narrow 12-15 loss to D-I University of the Incarnate Word.
"We beat the teams we needed to beat. Those teams were not easy teams," said head coach Peter Grandbois. "Two of them, we'd never beaten before. But we came ready to fight…we'll be back, and we'll be stronger."
Epée squad senior Hayley LeBlanc led the charge with an incredible 14 wins, taking each from nearly every nationally-ranked team that she faced. Senior Tuuli Qin-Terrill was not far behind with 11 wins, followed by junior Diyanshu Emandi with six.
In sabre, the young squad had an impressive weekend as well, with junior Sé DiFilippo leading the way with five, bout victories. Sophomore Shivika Churiwalla and freshman Tessy Udoh followed with four wins each.
On the foil piste, junior Amber Wardzala fought to three wins, including an impressive victory against world-ranked Manal Shaito from Detroit Mercy. She was followed by freshman Nina de Laperouse with two wins and junior Jocelyn Baeza with one win on the day.
