GRANVILLE, Ohio- After the opening round of the 2019 Lynn Schweizer Invitational from Denison Golf Club, the Big Red sits in third place just six strokes off the lead set by Stevenson University.
The Mustangs posted a first-round score of 323 (+39) paced by Laura Rentz' 78. DePauw University is in second at 326 while Denison is in third at 329. St. Mary's (Ind.) follows at 334 while Transylvania (335), Rose-Hulman (338), Ithaca (345), Wooster (349), and Otterbein (352) round out positions 5-9.
Playing in her first collegiate match, Denison's Laine Hursh carded an 81 to lead the Big Red's starting five. Hursh went out in 39 and followed with a 42 on the back nine. She totaled nine par's on the day and is tied for ninth in the field of 77 golfers.
Emmy Timberlake and Megan Wong followed with rounds of 82 for the Big Red. Timberlake fired a 40 on the front nine thanks to four pars. On the back, she birdied the par-5 12th hole, rebounding from a triple bogey on the 11th.
Wong was solid all afternoon with a pair of 41s on the front and back. She tallied seven pars on the day. Megan Munn closed out the top-four scorers for the Big Red with an 84. Ellie Broker carded a 91 out of the No. 5 position in the lineup.
The Big Red also had six golfers entered as individuals in the tournament. Sophia Alexander was two strokes shy of her career-low after a round of 78. She birdied the par-4 16th hole while racking up 10 pars on the day. Alexander is tied for fourth place on the overall leaderboard.
First-year Julia Shafir joined Hursh with an 81 in her first collegiate tournament. Olivia Cowley fired a 92 while Nicole Wetoska (95), Lauren Danielson (102) and Julia Giordano (104) closed out the scoring for DU.
The final round of the Lynn Schweizer Invitational will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. from Denison Golf Club on Sunday, Sept. 1.
