GRANVILLE, Ohio-- Top-ranked Denison suffered a 162-112 loss to the No. 3 ranked team in NCAA Division II, Indianapolis on Friday night at the Trumbull Aquatics Center. Despite the loss, the Big Red did post six event wins and three NCAA 'B' cuts on the night.
Senior KT Kustritz was a part of two of the three 'B' cuts for the Big Red. She won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.04 while Kate Mesaros checked in third in 1:05.22. She was also a member of the winning 200 medley relay team with Angela Le, Maddie Hopkins and Gabriella Nutter (1:44.06).
In diving, senior Naomi Clayton placed second on the 1-meter board with an NCAA Regional qualifying score of 262.35. Mattie Stauss followed in third place with a six-dive score of 250.20. On the 3-meter board, Ally Peterson finished second with a score of 251.62. Clayton finished third at 251.48 while Stauss (246.23) and Taylor Trapp (224.48) took fourth and fifth, respectively.
Denison's other victories came from Le in the 100 backstroke after she touched in 57.68. Mesaros finished first in the 200 breaststroke in 2:24.12. The night was closed out by a win in the 400 free relay as Nutter, Kustritz, Tara Culibrk, and Hopkins combined for a time of 3:30.83.
Other top finishes for DU included a third-place finish for Grace Kacmarek in the 400 IM (4:37.78). Denison went 1-2-3 in the 100 fly led by Kustritz's time of 56.78. Le was second in 57.56 while Hopkins checked in third in 57.68.
In the 200 backstroke, Bridget Horton was the runner-up in 2:07.77 and Erica Hsu placed third in 2:12.74. Zoe Whelan took second in the 200 fly, touching in 2:06.86 while Hopkins and Culibrk logged second-place finishes in the 50 free and 200 free, respectively.
Denison returns to the pool next Saturday, Feb. 1 when they host Youngstown State and Ohio Wesleyan at 10 a.m. at the Trumbull Aquatics Center.
