KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Denison's senior doubles team of Lauren Hawley and Emma Alsup defeated Anjie Kashyap and Sophia Strickland of Johns Hopkins 7-6 (5), 6-2 on Friday evening in the round of 16 at the 2019 NCAA Women's Tennis Doubles Championship held at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Mich. With the win, Hawley and Alsup advance to the tournament quarterfinals that will take place on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Despite an early 5-2 lead from Kashyap and Strickland in the first set, Hawley and Alsup rebounded to tie the set at 6-6 before winning the tiebreaker 7-5 to secure the first set. Working with a one-set advantage, Hawley and Alsup closed the book on the Johns Hopkins duo 6-2 to tally their first doubles championship victory as a team. Hawley and Alsup last competed at the NCAA Doubles Championship as a team in 2016.
The Big Red tandem will now turn their attention to Middlebury's Heather Boehm and Ann Martin Skelly who defeated Kathy Joseph and Sindhu Ravula of UT Dallas 6-1, 6-4 to reach the NCAA quarterfinals. The Middlebury tandem entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed and have totalled an overall record of 18-3 during the 2018-19 season.
