OBERLIN, Ohio--  Payton McElfresh set a new career-high with 17 kills but it wasn't enough as Denison suffered a 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 26-24, 25-22) loss to Oberlin.

Oberlin took the first set by winning seven of the final eight points to take a 1-0 lead.  In the second, Denison bounced back, winning three-straight points on kills by McElfresh, Olivia Burnside and an error by Oberlin to go up 23-20.  The Yeowomen got to within one point but kills by Kalia Kasper and Alex Tubbs gave the second set to the Big Red.

The third and fourth sets also came down to the wire.  In the third, DU had set-point but an error gave the Yeowomen new life at 24-24.  An ace followed by a kill from Lexi Mitchell gave Oberlin a 2-1 lead in the match.  In the fourth set, Oberlin held a three to five point advantage throughout and Mitchell's 24th kill of the match ended things at 25-22.

Mitchell racked up 20+ kills for the sixth time this season.  She also posted 23 digs and six service aces.

Denison got a 17 kill and 17 dig effort from McElfresh who hit at a .310 clip on 42 attempts.  Emma Woerner returned after missing the last four contests and finished with nine goals, 10 digs, and five blocks.  Burnside had eight kills while Tubbs finished with seven kills and a team-high six blocks.  Julia Miller posted 38 assists and 16 digs for Denison.

The Big Red falls to 7-12 overall and 2-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.  The loss snaps an 11-match winning streak against Oberlin that dated back to 2009. Denison returns to action on Friday, October 19 when they take on Finlandia and Olivet in Olivet, Michigan.
