GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Big Red were able to rally for a second-set victory 25-21, but the nationally-ranked (No. 21) Polar Bears of Ohio Northern closed out the match in four sets (18-25, 25-21, 19-25, 18-25) as Denison volleyball suffered a 3-1 loss in their home opener on Tuesday evening at Livingston Gymnasium.
Despite DU's 11 kills in the second set for a hit percentage of .154, the ONU tallied a kill rate of .261 during the final set to finish the match hitting .170.
Junior Emma Woerner led DU with 11 kills while posting 20 digs. Freshman Jenna Corrao paced the Big Red with 24 digs and Sophie Tight recorded a match-high 29 assists. Lucy Anderson added nine kills and four block assists while Catherine Anderson combined for a team-high seven blocks. Sophomore Payton McElfresh tallied eight kills and 14 digs.
Ohio Northern's Megan Mahon finished with a match-best 15 kills. McKenna Hostetler led the night with 44 digs and Kiki Carle added 23 assists. Madison Kern combined for eight blocks.
Denison will hit the road on Saturday, Sept. 14 when they travel to Richmond, Ind. to compete against Albion (12 p.m.) and Indiana-Southeast (2 p.m.) at the 2019 Earlham College Quaker Classic.
