RICHMOND, Ind. -- The Denison volleyball team improved to 5-5 on the season after sweeping a pair of match on Saturday afternoon. The Big Red opened play with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 32-30) victory over Albion before picking up a four-set win (25-19, 19-25, 27-25, 25-18) over Indiana-Southeast.
In DU's opening win over the Britons, first-years Sidney Gossard and Lucy Anderson paced the offense with 19 points apiece. Gossard racked up a career-best 16 kills, two service aces and a solo block, while Anderson recorded a career-high 17 kills to go along with three total rejections (one solo, two assists). Junior Emma Woerner finished the match with nine kills, two aces and two block assists to help out the offense. Freshman setter Sophie Tight dished out 40 assists to go along with 11 digs, while rookie libero Jenna Corrao paced the squad with 15 digs.
The nightcap saw the Big Red and Grenadiers trade off 25-19 scores. After dropping the second set, Denison went on to rebound with victories in the third and fourth sets en route to handing Indiana-Southeast their second loss of the season. Anderson, Gossard and Woerner all recorded double-digit scoring, led by Anderson's 11 kills and four total blocks (three solo). Gossard and Woerner each registered eight kills and four service aces. Tight handed out 34 helpers. Defensively, five different players logged double-digit digs. Corrao and Carly Tenaglia each had 16 digs to lead the charge. Payton McElfresh had 12, while Woerner and Tight chipped in 10.
Denison (5-5) returns to action on Wednesday (Sept. 18) when they host Wilmington. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
